In my new Create with Intuition series, I provide two art prompts every month – an intuitive prompt in the form of a word or phrase to explore, and a visual prompt.
Intuitive Prompt: “Pets”
Maybe you have a pet or a childhood pet that comes to mind when you think about this prompt. Or maybe, you’re not an animal person at all. In either case, the prompt is meant to invite you to explore what comes up whether positive or negative.
Visual Prompt: Fur
Photo Collection for Inspiration
Because of the intuitive prompt, and also because I’ve just recently released a fiber art brush set, this seemed like a good opportunity to explore the concept of fur as a texture. There are so many kinds of fur – coarse, soft, curly, silky, frizzy, long, short, and so on.
Tutorial Video
In the video, I go through my process of being inspired by these prompts. I ended up being inspired by a photo of a cat, not because I wanted to draw a cat but because I liked the stripes in the cat’s fur and felt inspired to make two pointed stripes coming from the top right corner of the screen, with a background that had more subtle stripes and a different color palette.
In the context of the intuitive prompt, the two contrasting stripes in the artwork came to represent the way that my own dog tends to disrupt me when I’m trying to concentrate on a task, but does so in a cute and cuddly way that is not unwelcome.
As I developed the piece, I decided to make the two main stripes stand out more but adding light colored fibres and bits of cloth behind them, and added some stitching embellishments on top.
I want to encourage you to use any brushes that you want to for these prompts! Just take a deep breath, think about the prompts, and grab whatever brushes are calling to you in that moment without thinking to much about why.
In my version, I wanted to explore creating furry textures with my new Fiber Art brushes. Some other options might be the “hair” brushes from Procreate’s default “Materials” brush collection, or really anything that inspires you right now.
